We’re looking for new members

We’ve opened up memberships again! This is your opportunity to get involved with our community and see if cohousing is right for you.

The path to membership

Step 1 - Attend an information session

This session is free of charge. It will give you an introduction to cohousing in general, and a brief overview of Kawartha Commons Cohousing.

Our next information session is coming up soon! It’s held over Zoom, and you can grab your spot here:

Step 2 - Become an Explorer

Ready to take the next step? Pay $100 to become an Explorer and get access to all the materials that we need to keep our organization running smoothly. This includes our design documentation, financial information, community agreements, meeting minutes, and policies. The Explorer period ends after 3 months, at which time you will decide whether to join as a full equity member, or take a pause and step back.

Step 3 - Attend Explorer Orientation sessions

As part of your Explorer journey, you’ll be invited to attend a series of in in-depth presentations about how the KCC community operates. We’ll explain steps to membership, what’s expected of members, financial commitments, and our decision-making process (called sociocracy). We’ll also explain the current status of the project, including what we’ve achieved, what is next on the project plan, and all the many challenges that we anticipate along the way. We won’t sugarcoat it - building a cohousing community isn’t fast, easy, or cheap.

You’ll have plenty of opportunity to ask questions in the sessions.

Explorer membership lasts three months. The Explorer stage is where you really dive in and participate in all aspects of the community’s development. You'll be expected to join circles, share your time and skills, and demonstrate your commitment by really getting to know us. Most meetings are held on Zoom, so don’t be put off if you live a long way from Peterborough. We also hold regular socials, both online and in person, along with in-person “superweekends” where out-of-town folks join us for events.

Step 4 - Become an Equity Member

After three months, if you're ready to commit, you can apply to become a full Equity Member. This is where it all gets real - but we’ll make sure you’re fully informed and know what you’re taking on.

If you’re not quite ready to make the leap to Equity membership after being an Explorer for three months, you can take a pause and come back to us at any time, on payment of a new Explorer fee.
